Last Saturday, Krampin' Kennedy and I wanted to see how the other half does it. Now we know why they are so darn picky about who goes into their bathrooms.

Facts about the ride (one of the OC's classics. Located in FootHill Ranch, foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, off Bake and Portola:

The standard loop at Whiting Ranch. 9.2 miles, 1400ft of climbing in 1 hr 18 minutes. Not too hard, but not easy. If you want,, you can connect on the back side to the STT and do the Luge, adding another 10 miles and lots of climbing.

It was scary for a split second. There was a snake on the trail (see fifth photo) at Santiago Oaks, located just next to Irvine Park in the Anaheim Hills region of the northwestern Santa Ana Mountains. SA is like a Disneyland for mountain bikers -- but with snakes!!!

Yesterday, joined by Ed Korb and Krampin' Kennedy, we did what we consider one of the world's Top Ten 2-hour mountain bike routes: 11.1 miles with nearly 2000 ft. of elevation gain up Chutes Trail >>>> up to Barham Ridge, >>>>down and up Deer >>> go east on Anaheim Trail, back to Robber's Roost (first photo), down Yucca Ridge to >>>>> long climb up Bumblebee then down>>>>> Yucca Ridge again to Coachwhip, big climb back to Barham Ridge>>>>> then beeline it to the Irvine park parking lot -- before that snake attacks again!!!

Denise Mueller, 43, mother of three, is training to ride a bicycle 153 MPH on the Bonneville Salt Flats this coming October.  Coached by the great 3-time Olympian John Howard and trained by sustainable-power guru Jacques DeVore of the Sirens & Titans Gym in West L.A., Denise, a Category 2 amateur rider, destroyed the 30-woman field on Saturday at the prestigious Barrio Logan Grand Prix in San Diego, not only beating Cat 1s and pro riders, but women 10 to 20 years younger!  She was  one of just a few women in her 40s.

This is amazing! This does not happen!

According to Denise: "It came down to a sprint. I walked away from everyone! I swear the Maximum Overload training in the gym is the real secret to what I saw in my sprint today! Maximum Overload works."

"The pro rider who finished second came up to me and said 'Nice sprint.' That felt good. John (Howard) told me, 'You've leveled up -- your baseline power is now higher.' I definitely feel it.   All racers should be doing Maximum Overload."

OK -- there's an ulterior motive here: I am writing a book about Maximum Overload with Devore, its inventor. We needed some high-profile guinea pigs to write about in the book, so I called John Howard, who has stayed remarkably fit into his late 60s by welcoming innovative ideas. As a surprise bonus, he brought Denise along with him -- and the girl really works, religiously following the heavy weight training regimen Jacques set up for her. Actually, she's a monster. She is pushing very heavy weights and proving that weights work for endurance athletes -- a very radical new idea that we say will revolutionize endurance training. Bottom line:  It's paying off for her -- and giving me lots to write about.

The photos below show her winning yesterday's race (a 50-minute criterium)  and doing Maximum Overload training in Jacques' gym the week before, building her "maximum sustainable power" (i.e.-- it makes your muscles so powerful that you don't poop out in the second half of the race) with explosive exercises like the MVP jumping machine, the deadlift, and walking lunges.  The cool thing for us average athletes and people over 45 or 50 is this: We can all build maximum sustainable power and stop muscle- and bone deterioration on our own with do-able exercises like weighted walking lunges and deadlifts done in the Maximum Overload protocol.

I interviewed Kevin Hart for a few minutes this morning at 9 a.m. in Downtown L.A. before he led a workout for 1000 people. He's a big workout fanatic and has an "ambassador" deal with Nike that has him and a group of trainers and a DJ with blaring rap music going all over the country and leading Sunday morning workouts. So I stayed around for the workout, which was a bunch of burpees, pushups, lunges, etc. It was done on a grassy lawn right across from the LA City Hall building, which is behind us in the photo. 

The exercises were exhausting if you went all-out as Kevin instructed us. They were not a problem for me; I plowed right through them, although about half of the crowd gassed-out and slowed down quickly .

When it's over, a young dude, who looked like he was about in his mid- to late 20s, comes up to me and says "you're an inspiration! "

I have no idea what he means. I see that he's wearing a Nike shirt. So I think that maybe he's with Nike Inc, Kevin Hart's sponsor, and it's his job to tell everybody that they are an inspiration

But no. He starts to say "you're an inspiration because…

Oh no-- is he going to say THAT? Before he says it, I look around at the crowd. I see no one else with gray hair. I see no one else seemingly above the age of 30.

So here it comes: I am an inspiration because I am old. OLD. It has come to that.

I ask young dude how old he is. He says he's 30. He's not a college kid -- he's 30 years old, 30 -- a grown-ass man! And I am now so old -- so clearly, obviously, irrefutably older than him or anyone else — almost double his age! -- that I now officially have become an inspiration just for not keeling over and requiring CPR! 

It has come to that.

This is way worse than the first day that someone calls you "sir" or "ma'am."

Everyone in my family says that I "use" them as props in my stories. I cannot lie; you hang out with me and you get written about. This week's lucky winner is my sister Cindy. She and my brother-in-law Chris (that's them with me below) took me on a cool hike in Joshua Tree National Park a few months ago  and naturally a story for the L.A. Times came out of it. I think what Cindy says in it conveys a refreshing message for women and couples and relationships. If you think so, pass it around to couples and women you know. BOBBI GIBB didn't intend to make a statement at the 1966 Boston Marathon, or to become a hero of the women's movement. She just loved running -- a rather odd thing in an era, the 60s, when women didn't do sports or were even allowed to run distances over 1.5 miles. Any longer was thought to injure their reproductive organs. But when her application to run the 1966 Boston Marathon was rejected because it was a "men's only event" according the race director, Gibb got ticked-off. Now she realized that she had to run in order to make a point:  Women can run — and run well. In fact, women could do anything hey wanted; all the restrictions and stereotypes of women in that era were bogus. If Gibb could  finish and finish well, she would inspire women to throw off their shackles and men to encourage them. Here is the story of the 50th Anniversary of her barrier-breaking run:
